Stewardship
We are children of God, disciples of Jesus Christ who feel called to a ministry of transformation through stewardship. We are sojourners who, along with many others, have some sense that it is through an understanding of holistic stewardship and a practice of gratitude and generosity that we will grow spiritually, that we will grow more and more into the likeness of the loving, generous God in whose image we are created. We believe that it is by virtue of our baptism that we are called to this ministry of stewardship. ~ The Episcopal Network for Stewardship
We the People of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church
- Believe that stewardship is more than simply asking parishioners to give more money.
- Want to change from a theology of scarcity to a theology of abundance.
- Want to try something different with a small group to see if that approach makes transformative change to the group and those it serve.
- Want to do more with less.
We will explore Eric Law’s holistic model for stewardship and congregational vitality, Holy Currencies, to move your parish beyond “time, talent, and treasure” to create missional and sustainable ministries. This model with its processes, enables church leaders to understand, develop, and utilize five other kinds of currencies besides money that are essential for creating sustainable and missional ministries. These currencies are: Time & Place, Gracious Leadership, Relationship, Truth, and Wellness. These currencies flow and recirculate to form a Cycle of Blessings which empower congregations to strengthen their internal relationships as well as reach out and connect with the diverse populations in their neighborhoods.
This summer of 2024 we will be working together as a congregation to discover who we are not only as a people, but what we mean to each other. The key is having a relationship with each other and then designing a work that has relationship with the greater community. We currently are connecting with other community organizations to find out who they are and why they do what they do in the community. Finding out about other organizations, outward expressions will help us to develop our own style and method of stewardship to reach others and be in relationship with them.
We want to start with an in-depth examination and exploration of the Holy Currencies and begin a process that empowers our parish to expand their vision of stewardship beyond money to include the currencies of relationship, truth, wellness, gracious leadership, time and place. Through this process, participants will create a year-around stewardship movement enabling the congregation to shift from maintenance to mission, from scarcity to abundance and from fear to grace.
Apostle Paul writes “Wherefore I put you in remembrance that you stir up the gift of God, which is in you by the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord…but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus
It is our hope that our parish team will have the skills and confidence needed to develop and refine a program to make Holy Currencies a part of our parish. We will be empowered and encouraged to engage with each other and more importantly, the community.
